The 2024 Australian Dragon Rectangular 1oz Silver Coin is limited to a mintage of only 250,000 coins, and features a stylised dragon ferociously chasing a flaming pearl within a unique rectangular design. The dragon swirls through clouds and water, which are omens of good luck. The inscription ‘2024’ to signify the lunar year of the dragon is also shown on the coin, alongside a ‘P125’ mintmark to signify the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.
The obverse of the coin bears Dan Thorne’s portrait of King Charles III. The coin’s weight, fineness, and monetary denomination also feature.
These unusual silver coins are rectangular-shaped like a bar. However, they bear a portrait of King Charles III on the obverse, along with a legal tender face value backed by the Australian government, thus they qualify as coinage.
Dragons are revered in Chinese culture as divine creatures who govern the wind and waves; they are symbols of good luck, strength, power, and wealth. They are linked to the “yang,” the masculine principle of the yin and yang.
2024 marks the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac. The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar Dragon include 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024. In Chinese culture, those who are born under the influence of this sign are said to be charismatic, confident, powerful, naturally lucky, and gifted.
This beautifully designed limited mintage silver coin would make an excellent keepsake gift to commemorate an event from 2024, the Year of the Dragon.
